Technical concepts

Public IP versus local IP

A local IP (such as 192.168.0.10) identifies your device inside your home network. The public IP is the address your router uses on the internet, shared by every device in the house through NAT. Websites and servers only see the public IP.

ASN and ISP

An ASN (Autonomous System Number) identifies a network that announces IP blocks on the internet, such as an ISP or a cloud provider. It tells you who is responsible for the address, which is useful for routing diagnostics and blocks.

Geolocation accuracy

Location is inferred from databases that map IP ranges to regions. The country is usually right, but the city may be your ISP's point of presence. It never reveals an exact address.

CGNAT

If the IP shown starts with 100.64 to 100.127, or differs from the WAN IP shown in your router, your ISP uses CGNAT: several customers share the same public IP and port forwarding will not work.

Is my IP logged?

No. The lookup is answered at the Cloudflare edge from the request's own data, and nothing is stored.

Why does my IP change from time to time?

Most residential ISPs assign dynamic IPs, renewed when the router restarts or periodically. A static IP is usually a separate paid service.

I see an IPv6 address; how do I see my IPv4?

Your browser preferred IPv6 because it is available. The IPv4 address only shows when the connection is made over IPv4, for example with IPv6 disabled.
